Reasons for Removal

Dentists don’t always need to remove wisdom teeth; in some rare cases, they erupt from the gums without any problems. When wisdom teeth are impacted, erupt from the gums misaligned, or there’s simply not enough room in your mouth however, they may cause problems.

Wisdom teeth are removed for a variety of reasons, including:

  • Toothaches and sensitivity
  • Orthodontic problems (shifting teeth)
  • Discomfort in the jaw, including stiffness and soreness
  • Cavities due to bacteria trapped around the gums and tooth
  • Crowding causing decay to occur to surrounding teeth.
Your wisdom teeth are considered vestigial—this means they no longer serve the function they once did. Impacted and misaligned wisdom teeth may cause a host of different complications; your dentist may recommend removing your wisdom teeth as a preventive measure, even if there are no complications yet.

Procedure Overview

There are two steps to the wisdom tooth removal procedure: The examination and the procedure itself.

During the examination, we may take X-rays of your teeth and jaws; these X-rays will also let us see the root structure of your wisdom teeth. Understanding this root structure will make the procedure itself both faster and more effective, with fewer possible complications.

Once the examination is through, we use a local anaesthetic to numb the area around your wisdom teeth. Depending on your preferences, we may also offer a sedative.

When you’re comfortable, the procedure begins. You may experience some pressure as your wisdom tooth is extracted, but our goal is to provide a painless experience. We use a variety of minimally invasive techniques to extract the tooth; the methods we use will depend on how erupted or impacted the tooth is, the root structure of the tooth, and more.

Once the procedure is complete and your wisdom tooth has been extracted, we’ll explain the recovery and aftercare procedure to you.

Cost & Insurance Coverage

The cost of wisdom tooth extraction in Winnipeg varies depending on the type of extraction being done, but costs are typically between $200-$600 per tooth. Insurance can often cover these charges as a basic coverage.

Factors that can increase the cost of wisdom tooth extraction include:

  • The length and complexity of the tooth’s roots
  • Whether or not you have impacted wisdom teeth
  • Whether or not the tooth has fully erupted
  • Whether the tooth is touching or pressing against other teeth

Wisdom tooth extractions tend to become more complicated as a patient gets older; that’s one of the reasons dentists may recommend getting your wisdom teeth extracted in early adulthood.

Recovery & Aftercare

Getting your wisdom teeth removed is a fairly simple procedure, but there are things to keep in mind in order to ensure a speedy, healthy recovery from the procedure. After wisdom teeth extractions, we recommend:

  • Taking 1-3 days off work/school
  • Using pain medication like ibuprofen or acetaminophen.  We may also prescribe painkillers.
  • Avoiding strenuous activity
  • Avoiding rinsing, spitting, or hot drinks for 24 hours (they can dislodge blood clots)
  • Avoiding smoking, using a straw, or anything with a suction motion for 24 hours
  • Avoiding alcohol for 24 hours
  • Only eating liquid or soft foods for 72 hours
  • Using warm saltwater rinse after 24 hours, then repeating regularly for a few days (use the mouthwash after you eat, when you wake up, and before you go to bed)

We recommend you have someone pick you up once your wisdom tooth extractions are completed—this is especially important if you were given a sedative. Having someone nearby to care for you can dramatically improve the recovery process.
