Please note that all the information provided below about CDCP coverage has been sourced directly from the Government of Canada's official CDCP website. You can also apply for the program on the site.

What Is The Canadian Dental Care Program?

The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) is a federal program designed to remove financial barriers to high-quality dental care. Through the initiative, eligible Canadian residents can receive financial assistance for a wide variety of essential oral health services. In order to qualify for coverage under the CDCP, you must meet all 4 of the following requirements:

-You do not have access to dental insurance.
-You file your tax returns in Canada (this information is used to assess your income).
-Your adjusted family net income is less than $90,000.
-You are a Canadian resident for tax purposes.

CDCP coverage is currently available to adults over the age of 65, children under the age of 18, and adults with a valid Disability Tax Credit certificate. Sometime in 2025, the program is expected to open up to all eligible adults between the ages of 19-64.

Understanding CDCP Dental Coverage In Manitoba

The CDCP improves access to oral health care by covering a portion of the costs associated with a wide variety of essential dental treatments including teeth cleanings, check-ups, fillings, crowns, root canals, extractions, and more. The amount of coverage provided by the CDCP is determined by the income level of the patient, with the highest level of coverage representing 74% of the provincial fee guide's prices for dental procedures (note that this percentage is what is referred to as "100% coverage of eligible oral health care service costs" on the CDCP website). This means that all CDCP patients must still pay for a portion of dental treatments out of pocket.

FAQ about the Canadian Dental Care Plan

What is the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP), and who qualifies for it?

The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) is a federal program designed to make essential oral health care more affordable for eligible Canadians who do not have access to dental insurance. In order to qualify, you must be a Canadian resident for tax purposes, have filed your tax return, have an adjusted family net income under $90,000, and not have access to private dental coverage. If you’d like a broader overview of the program and how it works, you can also read our blog on the Canadian Dental Care Plan.

Does the CDCP cover the full cost of dental treatment?

No — the CDCP does not fully cover the cost of dental care. Depending on your income level, the plan may cover only a portion of the fees associated with eligible services, which means you may still have some out-of-pocket expenses. Because coverage amounts can vary, we always recommend asking our team for help understanding what your estimated patient portion may be before treatment begins. For more details, you can visit our blog explaining what the Canadian Dental Care Plan covers.

What dental services may be covered under the CDCP at East Kildonan Dental Group?

The CDCP may help cover a variety of essential dental services, including exams, cleanings, fillings, root canals, extractions, and other commonly needed treatments. Coverage can vary depending on the type of procedure and whether any preauthorization requirements apply, so the best way to confirm eligibility is to speak with our team directly. If you’re also wondering how preventive dental care fits into your long-term oral health routine, our post on how often you should see a dentist in Winnipeg is a helpful place to start.

Can I use the CDCP for regular dental check-ups and cleanings?

In many cases, yes — the CDCP may help cover routine preventive care such as dental exams and cleanings for eligible patients. Preventive visits are an important part of protecting your oral health and identifying dental concerns before they become more serious or more costly to treat. If you’d like to learn more about what to expect during these visits, take a look at our blog on family check-ups at our Winnipeg dental clinic.

How often should CDCP patients book dental visits?

For most patients, regular dental visits every 6 months are recommended, though some individuals may need to come in more often depending on their oral health needs. Attending routine appointments can help prevent cavities, gum disease, and other dental problems from progressing unnoticed. Whether you are using the CDCP or another form of coverage, staying consistent with preventive care is one of the best things you can do for your smile. You can read more in our article on how often you should see a dentist in Winnipeg.

Can children and seniors use the CDCP at your clinic?

Yes — if they are eligible under the program, children and seniors can use CDCP coverage at East Kildonan Dental Group. The CDCP was introduced in stages, and seniors and children were among the first groups included. Our team is proud to support patients of all ages and help families navigate the process with clarity and care.
