Porcelain Veneers In West Kildonan

Book Appointment

West Kildonan has been around for 150 years; veneers have been around since the late 1920s. As the site of the Battle of Seven Oaks and the home of Kildonan Park, many of the places and events in this historic neighbourhood took place or were founded well before the modern cosmetic dentistry we offer today.

We don’t know whether or not the figures who played such a central role in this history would have benefited from veneers - but we do know that many of our current patients do! Here’s how veneers can help you smile with confidence:

What Are Porcelain Veneers?

Porcelain veneers are cosmetic dental coverings that fit over the front of your teeth. They’re designed to conceal chips, cracks, discolouration, gaps, and other cosmetic dental concerns.

How Veneers Work

Veneers are a cosmetic treatment; they don’t fix cracks and chips, they cover them. Porcelain is chosen because it emulates the look of natural teeth; it’s also durable and stain-resistant.

Who Makes A Good Candidate

Good candidates for dental veneers are people with good overall oral health. Because veneers are a cosmetic fix, they won’t address cavities or gum disease, both of which should be treated before veneers are applied.

You may not be a good candidate for veneers if:

  • You grind or clench your teeth - a condition known as bruxism. The pressure from grinding and clenching can chip or break your porcelain veneers.
  • You do not have enough enamel on the affected tooth; your dentist has to remove some enamel to make the surface of your tooth rough enough for the veneer to stick to
  • You’re missing too much of your tooth; crowns may be a better alternative for teeth that are very chipped or damaged.
  • You have a cavity (tooth decay) or gum disease. These diseases should be treated before veneers are placed. Gum disease can cause your gums to recede, which will negatively affect the appearance of the veneer, while veneers can obstruct your dentist’s ability to treat tooth decay.

Why West Kildonan Residents Choose Veneers

Whether you’re on stage at Rainbow Stage or watching from the crowd, you want to be able to smile with all your heart - and more obviously, with all of your mouth. Residents of West Kildonan choose veneers because they want to look and feel their best. Here are a couple of practical reasons why our porcelain veneers are a good choice:

Quick Results For Busy Families

Porcelain veneers are applied over the course of two simple visits to your dental office. Each appointment typically takes 1 to 2 hours, with the number of teeth that are getting veneers playing a big role in how long each appointment will take. Many patients can get veneers over the course of about two lunch breaks; this makes them one of the best dental cosmetic solutions for working families!

Long-Lasting Investment

Compare porcelain veneers to some other cosmetic treatments, and you’ll find at least one thing that stands out: How long they last. Porcelain veneers typically last for 10 to 15 years; pretty good for 2 to 4 hours' worth of treatment! When properly cared for - and with good oral hygiene habits - your dental veneers may even last 20 years or longer. That’s just another reason why they’re such a great choice for busy families in West Kildonan; once the treatment is done, you won’t have to worry about another veneer appointment for a decade or two!

The Veneer Process At EK Dental Group

We’re in East Kildonan, so we love it when patients come in from West Kildonan for veneers; you’re not far away, and the Kildonans are better together! Our dentists will treat you right, providing in-depth consultations and detailed planning, then using our decades of expertise to prepare your teeth and apply your veneers.

Consultation, Planning, & Preparation

The first step is the consultation. We want to understand your goals and needs, including:

  • What cosmetic concerns you have
  • What oral health concerns you have
  • Why you’re interested in veneers
  • What steps you may need to take before veneers are a viable option
  • What other cosmetic procedures might be used as an alternative to veneers
  • Your budget

We use this phase to determine whether or not veneers are right for you; some patients might benefit more from teeth whitening, from a crown, or even from composite resin fillings to fix chips. There are plenty of tools in the cosmetic dentistry kit!

Once we’ve determined that veneers are a good fit, we’ll begin the planning and preparation process. During this phase, we will:

  • Determine which teeth are getting veneers
  • Apply a local anesthetic (dental freezing) if you’re sensitive to discomfort
  • Remove a thin layer of enamel from the teeth where we will place the veneers
  • Make a mould of your teeth
  • Place temporary veneers on the teeth from which we removed enamel
  • Send the mould to the lab to get your permanent veneers manufactured

Placement & Aftercare

The lab typically takes 2 to 4 weeks to prepare your veneers; in some cases, the wait time may be lower. Once the veneers are ready, we’ll call you to make an appointment. During this appointment, we will:

  • Remove your temporary veneers
  • Use a chemical to rough up the enamel where your permanent veneers will be placed
  • Use composite resin to affix your veneers to your teeth

Once your veneers have been placed, the aftercare will begin. Our dentists will tell you what to expect; many patients experience:

  • Mild sensitivity
  • Mild discomfort
  • A feeling that their bite is a little “off”

You might experience these sensations after both the first and second appointments. That’s normal; some of your enamel has been shaved off or etched, and your gums may have become irritated during the procedure. You can also expect your bite to feel a bit strange at first; we’ve just placed porcelain over your teeth, which will modify the feeling of your bite even if your veneers fit perfectly.

The key to remember here is that these sensations should typically go away within the first 24 to 72 hours (though some patients might experience prolonged sensitivity for about a week). Should you experience discomfort for longer, talk to your dentist. You should also talk to your dentist if your bite still feels off after the first few days; a few simple adjustments can be made to improve your bite.

Proper oral health is crucial even when you don’t have veneers, but with veneers, it’s even more important as cavities will be more difficult to treat and gum disease can alter the appearance of your smile. Continue to brush twice a day and floss daily.

Grinding and clenching are bigger concerns when you have veneers; the pressure can break them. Wearing a night guard can help protect your veneers and your teeth.

Frequently Asked Questions About Veneers

Do veneers look natural?

Porcelain veneers look incredibly natural; the material mimics the colour and texture of natural teeth. When applied properly, your porcelain veneers can correct cosmetic issues without looking fake. Achieving a natural look is why it’s so important to get an accurate mould of your teeth and to wait a few weeks for the lab to complete your veneers; we want your teeth to look incredible.

Are veneers painful to get?

Painful is a stronger word than we’d use. Our dentists use local anesthetics to numb the teeth (and the area around them) in order to make the procedure as painless as possible. Getting a needle can produce some discomfort; we use a topical anesthetic to reduce that discomfort. Some patients find freezing unpleasant, but most would not describe the procedure as painful.

After the veneers are applied, many patients experience discomfort for some time; this discomfort might be for hours or for up to a few days. Again, we’d describe the experience as uncomfortable more than painful; a bit of tooth sensitivity, some soreness in the gums, and a bit of adjusting to the feel of the veneers.
