Partial Dentures: Types & Benefits

Not everyone needs a full set of replacement teeth; some people are missing only a few teeth. It’s more common than you might think: roughly 58.8% of Canadians have at least one decayed tooth. Missing teeth can cause difficulty in eating and self-esteem issues. Rest assured, there is a solution to this problem: partial dentures.

Partial dentures replace missing teeth; they don’t require you to have all teeth pulled like with complete dentures. Also known as “partials”, they’re an artificial set of teeth that is designed to look as natural as possible and allows you to retain your natural teeth. These dentures come in a variety of types; some are removable, some are permanent, while others are temporary. Here are a few that you can choose from, and the benefits of each:

Implant-supported bridge: The implant is supported by titanium posts instead of the natural teeth, which makes it different from a traditional bridge. It’s a permanent option, as the posts are inserted into the jaw bone. Implants have a higher cost, but they also have the longest lifespan.

Cast metal removable partial denture: This type of denture is removable and one of the most commonly used partials. Artificial teeth are placed on a light cast metal frame. As long as they are well looked after, cast metal dentures can last for many years.

Acrylic removable partial denture: For a temporary solution, many patients turn to acrylic removable dentures. They are often used while a permanent partial denture is being created. Also called a “flipper”, its bulky acrylic base makes it difficult to speak and smile normally. This type of denture is the most affordable, so it’s a good option for patients on a budget.

Flexible partial denture: These dentures are an alternative to acrylic removable ones; they are also temporary, but since they’re made of plastic, they’re more comfortable to wear and less noticeable.

Fixed bridge: If you only have a few missing teeth, this may be the best solution for you. A bridge relies on healthy natural teeth to support it on either end. The surrounding teeth have a crown placed on them, to which the artificial teeth (or pontics) are attached. It’s a non-removable option that is long-lasting; you take care of them just as you would your natural teeth.

A consultation with your dentist will help you determine which type of partial denture will be right for you. Modern technology has made dentures more realistic looking and convenient than ever. You won’t have to be afraid that when you smile, people will see your lost teeth. Once you adjust to your partial dentures, you’ll find that you can speak, smile, and eat just as you did before. Your mouth will change over time and you may find that your dentures require adjustments. If you develop sores on your gums, or your partial dentures are falling out as you talk, contact your dentist for a readjustment.

Partial dentures can restore the confidence to those that are missing teeth. Since they’re removable, they’re very easy to clean; leave them in a denture-cleaning solution overnight, and brush them as you would your natural teeth.
